George Michael is one of the few great artists to successfully crossover over from boy band heartthrob to genuine icon, loved by fans and critics alike.
The bubblegum pop he produced with Wham has stood the test of time. But his solo work showed a depth of feeling few would have seen coming. Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1 is my favourite, but Faith and Older are amazing, too.
Of course, there was a lot of sadness in his life as well. And for me the aching love songs - both of a personal and universal nature - that best demonstrate his writing gift, and the bewitching range of his voice.
Sadly he left us way too young. And when you marry his early passing with the years lost to recording due to a dispute with his record company, one is left wondering just how much greater he could have been.
